CatalogIT™
General Information
Google's catalog search application, unofficially
launched on December 15th, 2003, is currently available in beta
format. The ability to do a catalog search is unique when
performed on the web. For example, Google manually scans approximately
2,500 mail order catalogs then use their own Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) software to make them keyword-searchable. This is
unlike the majority of Google's endeavours, which typically require
little human intervention.
Search Results
When a catalog search is performed, the results of
the search are listed and displayed as images. Each listing consists of
three images, the first of which is the catalog's cover (this is really
a link to that catalog's front page). The second image is usually a
paragraph or so of highlighted information from the specific page
within the catalog that matched the criteria in your originating search
request. The third image is an enlargement of that same highlighted
paragraph, but this one shows the original search criteria highlighted.
Both of these are links to the same page of the catalog. Some listings
may have a "more results from this catalog" link.
Catalog Pages
Each catalog page contains a toolbar at the top.
Options within the toolbar enable you to go back to the previous page,
ahead to the next page, show one page, two pages, or three pages at a
time and/or search within the catalog. The toolbar also displays the
name and issue of the catalog, as well as what their associated phone
number is.
Other Catalog Solutions
Acroterion
Dynamic to Static (D2S) software is able to convert
catalogs or any unstructured content sources to a static optimized
website. As a result, D2S optimizes website visibility and fixes
problems related to searching on dynamic
data base catalogs by republishing dynamic pages as static
ones. With D2S it is finally possible to make your catalog visible, at
all levels – homepages, categories and products.
