With no advance warning, thousands of websites were dropped from their page rank or dropped from the search engine altogether. The blackout came at a time when the search engine was preparing for its future IPO and some on Wall Street speculated that the websites were dropped as a cost savings method. However, unlike previous outbreaks, a "cure" exists that makes it easy to compare results from "old" to "new" Google.

Here are some preliminary thoughts and suggestions to consider about the latest Google changes.

No one knows yet for sure what is going on with the Google changes. So don't make drastic changes yourself yet. Also, we don't know if they are going to keep things like they are this month. There has been a lot of criticism of it affecting searchers very negatively.

We've never recommend making immediate changes to all sites, based on one month's changes at a search engine. Certainly develop a few test pages to test some things out. But, to go in a radically change a Website based on one or two months experience with a change at one search engine, even if it is a major one, is not a good strategy.

• Make sure you have good quality, sites with good PageRank (5/10 and up) in your same Website "theme" linking to you.
• Approach these other sites with linking to you using your keyword phrase, not your company name.
• Have some strong sites linking to you that are willing to give a little more text surrounding their link to you. Or even creating
  a page on their site that talks about your company using the keywords you want good ranking for.
• Make sure you are in Yahoo and Open Directory Project, the Directory for Google. Notice how these are coming up now like never
  before.
